October 4-5, 2012 will be the 30th International Activated Carbon Conference (IACC-30) and Activated Carbon School October 1-26, 2012 near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA international airport. IACC-30 will again bring beginners and veterans together to share knowledge and information to continue to grow the size and quality of the activated carbon (AC) industry. If AC is important to you, now or in the future, this is the conference and short courses you need to attend, to connect with experts to gain the knowledge you need to be successful. Attendees represent the organizations you want to do business with.
Prior conferees want a practical and useful focused list of subjects covered. Activated carbons are used in an amazing number of different ways. In a typical day AC supports your activities: coal burning electric power plants use powdered AC (PAC) to remove mercury and other toxicants from their emissions; municipal water plants use granular AC (GAC) to purify water for your household; a point-of-use AC filter or carbon block is used to remove the last organic and inorganic traces from the municipal drinking water supply; the white granular sugar on the breakfast table is prepared by decolorizing raw colored sugars with GAC; the gold ring symbolizing marriage used GAC in the recovery process; fabrics and other construction materials around the home use AC to comply with environmental regulations; the adhesive tapes on bandages and other adhesive tapes use AC to recover and re-use volatile solvents used in the manufacturing process; AC is used to separate oxygen and nitrogen; AC is used in batteries and capacitors; the dry cleaning industry uses AC to decrease emissions; the soft drinks and beverage industry uses AC to purify and standardize water before beginning their processes; AC is used as a catalytic support because it has more surface area per volume than any other known material; AC is used in tertiary waste water treatment; AC is used in animal litter boxes to control odor; human sanitary products use AC to control odor; AC is used in ground to facilitate plant growth and carbon dioxide sequestration; AC is used to clean-up contaminants from river bottoms; AC is used in kidney dialysis machines to purify blood. Many other AC applications exist, and will be developed, but you get the idea.
Products and Service suppliers can purchase six foot vendor tables to display. Vendors may submit marketing sheets for inclusion into the bound Conference Proceedings without attending. Conference Proceedings can be purchased after the conference is completed. Conference Proceedings include full contact information for each conferee for easy communications, abstracts of oral- poster-, and abstracts-only presentations.
Since AC users do not learn about this subject in their academic training the Activated Carbon School was started in 1985 as a way to help fill this information gap and connect users, suppliers, and manufacturers of AC and related services. Relevant AC courses are provided three days before and after the two-day conference as options to conferees at additional costs. For the convenience of the global AC market, courses are provided monthly in major cities and at the clients time and place. Education is important to maximize the benefits offered by activated carbons.
There are 17 courses in the AC school. The most relevant and immediately useful course titles are:
If you have a ready-to-go course to help grow the size and quality of the activated carbon and related industries, let us know as we want to add courses to the Activated Carbon School.

IACC welcomes young technical presenters. An award is provided the best student oral or poster presentation.
Each conference provides a Leadership Speaker program. It is designed to provide overall industry guidance and major new business opportunities. Dr. Hugh McLaughlin will provide October Leadership speaker program lecture titled "Activated Carbons as Soil Enhancement for Plant Growth and Climate Control"
You are invited to recommend Leadership Speakers and subjects for future conferences.
Airport Holiday Inn on University Blvd (phone: 412.262.3600) provides free airport transportation. Holiday provides a discount for sleeping rooms if you tell them you are attending the carbon conference and courses. You don't need a car.
